Police say he had a loaded, defaced gun in the car and a spent shell casing.
CANTON Police recognized a wanted man and started to conduct a “high risk traffic stop,” but the man continued on, according to Stark County Jail records.
Stark County court records show Curt S. Allen Jr., 26, of Fifth Street NE, led police on a brief, “high-speed pursuit” until he lost control of the Ford Fusion he was driving, struck a guy wire and rolled the car.
Arriving police pulled him from the wreckage and arrested him without incident, said Police Capt. Dave Davis.
Allen also had a loaded, defaced gun in his vehicle and a spent shell casing, Davis confirmed.
Officers initially tried to stop Allen at 9:17 p.m. Sunday when they spotted him at an intersection at 12th Street and Fulton Road NW. Davis said he was wanted on warrants and the traffic stop was labeled “high risk” because of the charges.
Allen continued on until, attempting to turn west onto 18th Street from Cleveland Avenue NW, he lost control of the vehicle, struck the wire on the pole and overturned.
He was jailed on the warrants, a misdemeanor charge of possession a defaced firearm and felony charges of failure to comply with police, having weapons under disability and another charge of improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle.
Court records show Allen was convicted in July 2017 of receiving stolen property, carrying a concealed weapon, improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle and possession of a defaced firearm. He was sentenced to intensive supervisory probation. In January, after he failed to appear in court for a probation-revocation hearing, a capias warrant was issued for his arrest.
Allen remained behind bars Monday, held without bond pending a Canton Municipal Court hearing.
