The woman and child were taken to an area hospital.
WASHINGTON TWP. A southwest Canton man was jailed on multiple felony charges, accused of assaulting a child and the child’s mother, Stark County Jail records show.
Dakota J. Pettinger, 26, of Bryan Avenue SW, then forced them into the basement of a township home, threatening to kill them if they tried to leave, the jail records show.
The victims were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Maj. C.J. Stantz of the Stark County Sheriff’s Office. Their conditions were not available Thursday.
Deputies arrested Pettinger at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at a home in the 3100 block of Beechwood Avenue NE.
Pettinger struck the woman in the face with a piece of wood and hit her several times, “causing both eyes to be blackened (with) several lacerations to and swelling all over her face,” the jail records say.
He is also accused of throwing a PlayStation at her and striking the child with it, causing a head injury.
The woman was able to send a text message to a relative, who then called for help, said Sgt. Cliff Hall.
Pettinger was already wanted on felony warrants charging him with domestic violence and aggravated drug possession.
